How my math tutor helped me in unexpected ways

Hi, my name is Ellie Powers. I am going into eighth grade, and I have been going to a tutor since the middle of fifth grade. I started out doing it because I was falling behind in learning my basic multiplication tables, and checking my work. My tutor has been so helpful to me since then. I have improved so much!

Reviewing and previewing math content

At my school, we learn advanced math and sometimes, we jump from topic to topic quicker than I can handle. So, every Thursday after school we work on my homework together and now, because it’s summer, my tutor helps me get ready for eighth grade and revisit anything I don't remember from seventh.

I remember in fifth grade feeling like none of my math made sense, my parents couldn’t help me, and I definitely wasn’t getting the best scores on my tests and quizzes. Now, I feel confident in math. I have the right study tools, and math is even one of my favorite subjects! I have learned that once you understand math and know what to do, it can become really fun and enjoyable!

Teaching study and test-taking skills

You probably already know this, but in Chicago, high schools are very competitive. You need really good grades and adequate test-taking skills which are extremely important. That was a thing that I needed help with in tutoring and I got it. Not only did my tutor teach me the basic math facts that I needed, but she also taught me things like how to study for a big test, ways to break down problems that I don’t know the answer to, how to check and revise my work, how to manage my time, and so much more! All of which are not only important in basic school, but also in the test to get into high school!

Building a relationship and building confidence

Another thing in tutoring that has really improved since I started is how I talk to adults. Talking to one every Thursday, even if it's just about school, has helped me improve my social skills so much! Not to mention, now that my grades have improved, so has my confidence. Getting good scores, feeling proud of myself, and looking at all of my improvement over the past two-and-a-half years has made me a happier, more confident person!

Overall, I believe that if there are any parents that are considering getting their kids a tutor in any subject, then they definitely should, because it can be helpful for a multitude of reasons.

Thanks, Ellie for sharing how tutoring has helped you! If your child needs a math tutor in Chicago, please reach out to us today!
