Math tips I've learned from tutoring

Here at Chicago Home Tutor, we’re excited to kick off a new blog series written by our students. Today’s article was written by rising 5th grade CHT student Lucy Wilson who will share math tips she’s learned from tutoring!

Math tips I’ve learned from tutoring

I started working with my tutor Ms. Linda in April of 2020. We spend some of our time working on math and she has shown me some very helpful tips. Like checking my work when it gets hard, estimating for a hard multiplication problem when it is a 3 or 2 digit number or slowing down if I am going too fast to think.

Slow down

One math tip I’ve learned is to always slow down so I can’t make big mistakes. I use this tip a lot because before I had a tutor I didn’t know I should slow down. Then my tutor, Mrs. Linda, told me to slow down so I wouldn’t make as many mistakes. So I took that tip to heart and I am now slowing down and didn't make that many mistakes on my math test and working with Mrs. Linda.

Check your work on 2 and 3 digit subtraction

Another math tip is to always check 2 to 3 digit subtraction. I use this tip a lot and how to use it is pretty easy. You subtract the numbers you have. Then whatever number you get, you add it to the bottom number. If you get the top number when you added you got the subtraction right. If you didn’t get the top number you maybe made a mistake. I really like this tip a lot because you could say I am not the best at subtraction and this tip helped me a lot.

Estimate when multiplying

The last math tip is to always estimate when it’s multiplication. I use this because 2 and 3-digit multiplication is pretty hard for me. So I told myself to estimate the tens with multiplication because tens are easy for me. So I’d estimate that first and let’s say that answer to the estimate was around 100. Then I would go do the original problem and get to the answer and make sure it was close to my estimate.

Overall these math tips or strategies have helped me a lot in school.
