Assessments for Executive Functioning

Here at Chicago Home Tutor we’re excited to launch a new service for our students and families. We’re thrilled to announce that we now offer an executive functioning assessment in the form of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning, Second Edition (BRIEF-2).

What is an executive functioning assessment?

An executive functioning assessment will help your child’s team to understand specific areas of need with regards to executive functioning. It’s helpful because it is a norm-referenced measure, meaning that many students (over 3,600 in this case) have completed the assessment. The comparison pool really gives us a solid baseline for which skills and behaviors are typical and which may need some extra support.

Why would I want to consider having my child complete the BRIEF-2?

Some parents or schools who contact us have a really clear and specific idea of what they’d like to accomplish with executive functioning coaching. Others sense that their child is struggling but have difficulty pinpointing the source of the challenge. The BRIEF-2 assessment can be a great way to hone in on what your child needs and how we can support them!

Who at CHT is administering our BRIEF-2 assessments?

We’re really excited to kick off this program with learning behavior specialist, Ashley Murphy. Ashley has her B.A. in Neuroscience and Behavior, her M.S. in Special Education, and her M.A. in Clinical Psychology. She is currently studying her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

What can I expect from this executive functioning assessment?

Our BRIEF-2 assessment process follows:

  1. Ashley Murphy will reach out to you to schedule a 30-minute phone call to understand any relevant background information and your primary goals for the assessment.

  2. She will ask you to identify 3-5 people to complete the rating forms (see next question) and will send the forms to the people you select.

  3. When we receive the completed rating forms, she will schedule a 30-minute phone call to go over the results with you.

  4. We will provide you with an Interpretive report with tutoring recommendations. See test report here.

  5. If your child is currently participating in services with us or if you’re planning to start services, we can share the reports with your team here at CHT with a list of suggestions for what to work on during tutoring or executive functioning coaching.

Who should complete the BRIEF-2 assessment forms?

We recommend the assessment is completed by 1-2 parents, 1-2 teachers, and the student.

How much does the BRIEF-2 assessment cost?

The BRIEF-2 executive functioning assessment will be completed for a flat fee of $300. That includes 3-5 assessment forms, your pre and post session call with Ashley, and a bulleted list of recommendations for tutoring/executive functioning coaching (if your child is participating in services with CHT).

What does the BRIEF-2 executive functioning assessment NOT do?

This is not a comprehensive diagnostic assessment. This assessment is intended to guide executive functioning services and not to provide any kind of diagnosis. If you’d like a referral for a comprehensive evaluation which will be diagnostic in nature, please contact us for recommendations for providers!

Does my child have to participate in tutoring if we complete this executive functioning assessment?

No. There is no commitment to tutoring required.

What areas of executive functioning will be assessed with the BRIEF-2?

The BRIEF-2 three domains (cognitive, behavioral, and emotional regulation) with 10 clinical scales (Inhibit, Self-Monitor, Shift, Emotional Control, Working Memory, and Plan/Organize are included on all forms. Initiate, Task-Monitor, and Organization of Materials are also on the Parent and Teacher forms. The Self-Report Form also includes Task Completion).

Please contact us if you’d like to ask questions or sign your child up for this assesssment!
